Provide relief from asthma and COPD symptoms
Purified air is of vital importance for people suffering from respiratory infections and lung diseases.
Why a UVC air purifier is essential in the fight against asthma and COPD symptoms
What is the difference between asthma and COPD?
COPD and asthma are two lung diseases that are very similar. However, they both have different causes and treatment methods.
You can get and have asthma at any age, while COPD usually occurs in people over the age of 40. COPD often is the result of smoking or prolonged exposure to harmful substances, while asthma is an allergy, often hereditary, in which you are hypersensitive to certain particles.
The symptoms also differ. COPD mainly involves shortness of breath, phlegm and coughing, while asthma is much more associated with shortness of breath.
While asthma is reasonably manageable with medication, COPD is chronic and often gets worse because the airways are damaged beyond repair.
Asthma and COPD in the workplace
In the Netherlands there are more than 640,000 people who suffer from permanent asthma and more than 613,000 people officially diagnosed with COPD.
Occupational exposure to substances, gases, smoke and vapours plays a role in the development of both diseases. And as many as 1 in 5 people suffering from these lung diseases have great difficulty in performing and keeping their job.
Jos Rooijackers, pulmonologist and chairman of the Dutch Knowledge Center for Labour and Lung Disorders (NKAL) indicates that the costs of absenteeism due to lung disorders is more than 1 billion euros per year. In addition, 3,000 people die each year from lung diseases as a result of substance exposure at work.

With lung diseases, people often immediately think of (second-hand) smoking. This is indeed an important cause, but definitely not the only one.
Nevertheless, the Dutch government is implementing many regulations to disencourage smoking at work. The latest addition is that indoor smoking areas are no longer allowed. As a result, smokers are now forced to go outside. And there are many companies that go even further and have non-smoking premises.
Yet there are more things that need to be done. It is very important that the general indoor air quality is to be improved. This can be done, for example, by placing an air purifier with HEPA filter.
In particular a HEPA class 13 filter is most suitable. This filter stops 99.9% of the harmful airborn particles, plus it still has a capacity of purifying more than 300 m3 air. Making it also very suitable for larger spaces such as offices, canteens and meeting rooms.
Why UVC light also helps
Asthma and COPD are lung diseases. And with every disease, a good general condition helps to reduce symptoms and to recover faster. That is why it is very useful that indoor air is purified from viruses and bacteria, so that people are less likely to become infected. And that is exactly what UVC light does.
A well-functioning immune system helps everyone, but especially people who are already weakened by underlying suffering.
Therefore, when you are looking for an air purifier, please do not only look at the HEPA filter and its classification, but also check if the it does something extra for your health as well. UVC light is the most effective against viruses and bacteria, plus it purifies the air from pollen and other allergens. And as you know, purified air is of vital importance for people suffering from respiratory infections and lung diseases.
